Maths

Year 7 Maths Team Challenge – 2 teams of 4 stunning Year 7 mathematicians took part in the recent inter school challenge.  There were 20 teams in all from 9 schools. The 2 Corsham teams came 4th and 6th – which was a very impressive performance indeed.

On Tuesday 15 February 180 primary school students took part in the Maths Happy Puzzle Day at Corsham School.  The noise was deafening! But they had a great time solving lots of puzzles.  As well as having lots of fun they learnt that a problem can always be solved if you persevere and they improved their team working skills as well.

Students who got full marks on Problem of the Term, term 3 2010/2011 are as follows:

Year 7: Katie James O7, Thomas Plowright R7

Year 8:  Joy Wingrave W8

Year 9: Bobbi Lang O9, Jethro Large A9, Hannah Lias H9, Lauren Merrett A9

It was a hard set of questions this term, so very well done!!!

Music

The Spring Music Concert will be on Thursday March 31.  Tickets will be available for £2 during the 2 weeks prior to the concert from the Music Department and on the door.

Rachel Lamerton in Year 12 is an amazing musician, she plays the clarinet, in October she was invited to go to China to play with a Wiltshire Orchestra.  Her latest success is that she has passed the Music Performance Diploma – this is beyond grade 8 – and she can now put DipABRSM after her name.

Year 8 Rugby team success

On Friday 11 February the Year 8 rugby team played in the final of the Wiltshire County Cup. They were up against Bishop’s Wordsworth School, Salisbury a renowned rugby school. Corsham gave no ground and destroyed the opposition in no time. By half time Corsham were ahead by 19 points to nil with tries from Ollie Swanson and 2 from Jack Utton. In the second half, Bishops applied more pressure but Corsham tackled like demons and scored a charge down try by Jake Golledge. Bishop’s scored a consolation try towards the end of the game but Corsham were clear and deserved winners. The boys were a great credit to the school.

Berlin Exchange

From the 21 to 28 January a group of 17 students from Years 10 and 11 flew out to Berlin on the first leg of the exchange. As ever they were warmly welcomed by their German hosts. During the seven day visit the students spent some time attending lessons in the partner school, the Schiller Oberschule, in the centre of Berlin. We also visited many of the well known sites of Berlin. These included a guided tour of The Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and the site of the Berlin Wall, the Holocaust Memorial and Potsdam. For many, one of the highlights of the trip was the visit to the world famous Berlin Zoo where the weather was very suitable for the polar bears and penguins as it was snowing! There was of course also time for shopping and a visit to a well known chocolate shop! The weekend was spent with the families. The exchange will be completed when the German students return in March. A selection of photos of Berlin and the trip is now available to view on the Parent Portal  > Student Bulletin. If you are interested in finding out more about the Schiller Oberschule please look at www.schiller-gymnasium-berlin.de
