|The finishing touches are being applied to the first phase of Corsham’s new Springfield community campus ready for its opening at the beginning of August. However, essential last-minute preparations mean the new building has not been handed over to Wiltshire Council by the contractor and therefore the first facilities in the new building will now be available for use from next Thursday (24 July), not this Friday (18 July) as hoped.
Also, following this week’s planned two-day full closure of the existing leisure centre (Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 July), all leisure facilities will remain closed until Thursday 24 July.
From that date, the sports hall, squash court and outside changing rooms will be available, along with the temporary fitness suite, and community rooms for the health and fitness programme and planned bookings in the new campus building.
Centre staff will be contacting groups with bookings to notify them of the delay – and help them make alternative arrangements wherever possible. They will also try to contact casual users.
A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “Clearly it is disappointing that those with bookings cannot use the new facility and we apologise for the inconvenience to them – but it is essential that the campus is properly ready.”
This does not impact the 7 August date when the new campus opens with a new library, cafe, exhibition space, as well as leisure facilities and a range of rooms for hire by community groups and for private events. Further services including the Neighbourhood Policing Team, youth and adult learning difficulties, and a climbing wall will be available from September.
The swimming pool and adjacent health suite will remain closed until towards the end of the year as they undergo a major planned refurbishment including a new roof.
